Mac mini M6 Desk Setup Guide (2026): Monitors, Docks, Stands, and Accessories

Apple announced the 2026 Mac mini on August 25. Pre-orders are open and it ships September 22. It uses the same 5 by 5 inch, two-inch-tall silver enclosure as the 2024 model, so every stand, mount, and hub built for the M4 mini should still fit. What changed is inside: an M6 chip at $899, or an M5 Pro at $1,699. This is a pre-order buying guide, not a review. We have not tested the new machine yet. What follows is what to pair with it, based on Apple’s published specs and the accessories we already know work with this enclosure.

Why the Mac mini M6 Is the Desktop to Build Around

The Apple Mac mini M6 starts at $899 with 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. The M6 has a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, and a dual Neural Engine made of two 16-core engines, with 170GB/s memory bandwidth. Apple claims up to 40% faster CPU, up to 2x graphics, up to 4x AI performance, and up to 2x storage speed versus M5. Those are Apple’s numbers, not ours. The $1,699 M5 Pro model moves to a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU.

The port layout is what makes it good for a desk, and it did not change. Two USB-C ports at 10Gb/s sit on the front for drives and headphones. The rear carries three Thunderbolt ports, HDMI 2.1, 2.5Gb Ethernet, a 3.5mm jack, and the power inlet. Here is the one detail that decides your dock purchase: on the M6 those three ports are Thunderbolt 4 at 40Gb/s. On the M5 Pro they are Thunderbolt 5 at 120Gb/s. Wireless is Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread on Apple’s N1 chip.

Two things to plan for. Apple has not said the power button moved, and since the enclosure is unchanged, expect it on the underside. And 256GB fills fast. Budget for external storage from day one.

Best Monitor

The Apple Studio Display was refreshed in March 2026 and is the natural pairing. It is a 27-inch 5K panel at 600 nits with two Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB-C ports, 96W of power delivery, and a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View. Thunderbolt 5 is backward compatible, so it works over the M6’s Thunderbolt 4 with one cable carrying video and the hub. It costs $1,599, more than the computer.

The value 5K is the Samsung Odyssey G8 G80HF, a 27-inch 5K IPS panel with a 165Hz refresh rate for about $950. It uses HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1 and does not list Thunderbolt, so you connect over the mini’s HDMI 2.1 port or a USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable from a Thunderbolt port. Assume 5K at 60Hz as the safe outcome on a Mac; whether macOS drives the full 165Hz over either connection is something to confirm before buying.

If you want more space, the LG 32U990A is a 32-inch 6K Thunderbolt 5 monitor with 96W power delivery at $2,000, listed as available soon. The 2026 mini supports 6K at 60Hz. For HDR work, Apple’s Studio Display XDR at $3,299 adds mini-LED, 1000 nits sustained, 2000 peak, and 120Hz.

Best Dock and Hub

The Satechi Mac mini Stand and Hub is the accessory we recommend first for the base M6. It sits under the mini, matches the footprint, adds USB-A and an SD reader, and has an internal NVMe slot. That fixes the 256GB drive without a cable on the desk. Built for the M4 enclosure, which the 2026 model shares; confirm the listing says M4 or later before ordering. Around $100 to $120.

If you bought the M5 Pro, the CalDigit TS5 Plus is the dock that uses its bandwidth. It is a Thunderbolt 5 dock with a large mix of Thunderbolt, USB-C, USB-A, Ethernet, and card reader ports. On the M6 it still works, but at Thunderbolt 4 speed, so you are paying for headroom you cannot use. A TB5 dock only pays off on the Pro chip.

For the M6, a Thunderbolt 4 dock like the CalDigit TS4 or the monitor’s own hub covers the same jobs for less.

Keyboard and Mouse

The Keychron K2 HE is our mechanical pick. It is a 75 percent wireless board with Hall effect switches and a Mac layout out of the box. The white version matches a silver mini.

If you want Touch ID for unlocking and purchases, the Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID is the only keyboard that does it.

For pointing, the Logitech MX Master 4 is the productivity mouse we recommend, with haptic feedback, the Actions Ring shortcut menu, and the MagSpeed scroll wheel. The Apple Magic Trackpad is the alternative for macOS gestures.

Stand and Mounting

Because the enclosure is unchanged, anything sold for the M4 mini should fit the M6 and M5 Pro. The Satechi hub above is the best desk stand because it adds ports and storage. A plain aluminum Mac mini stand is cheaper and lifts the machine enough to reach the bottom power button.

A VESA mount bolts the mini to the back of the monitor or the arm. That is the emptiest desk you can get, but the front ports become hard to reach. An under-desk mount hangs it beneath the desktop and rides with a standing desk frame. Look for listings that say M4 or 2024 mini; the older Intel and M1 minis were wider and their mounts will not fit.

Audio and Webcam

The Mac mini has no camera or microphone. If you buy the Studio Display, its 12MP Center Stage camera and Desk View cover calls. Otherwise the Insta360 Link 2 is the webcam we recommend for a desk that stays put: 4K, gimbal tracking, and a microphone good enough for calls. Around $199.

For sound, the Audioengine A2+ are small powered speakers with a USB input, so they skip the headphone jack. Around $269 a pair.

Lighting and Desk

The BenQ ScreenBar Halo clips to the top of the monitor and lights the desk without glare on the screen. It adds a rear bias light and a wireless dial. Around $180 to $200 depending on the version.

The Discounted M4 Alternative

The 2024 Mac mini M4 launched at $599 with 16GB and 256GB, and retailers are still selling it new, now at a discount as the M6 arrives. It has the same enclosure, the same front USB-C ports, the same three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports on the base chip, HDMI, and Ethernet. Buy the $899 Mac mini M6 unless you need Thunderbolt 5, and put the money you save into the monitor, because it is what you look at all day. The Samsung G80HF gets you 5K for about $950. The Studio Display gets you the sharpest text on any desktop, plus a camera, for $1,599. Add the Satechi stand for storage and ports, hide the mini behind the monitor or under the desk, and the setup is finished. If you want to spend less, the discounted M4 runs the same desk.
