Apple announced the 2026 Mac mini on August 25 and it ships September 22. There are four standard configurations, and the difference between them is not the chip in three of the four. This guide walks each one, explains what the upgrade money actually buys, and covers the two decisions that trip people up: storage and memory. It is a pre-order guide. $899: M6, 16GB / 256GB

The Apple Mac mini M6 base model has the full M6 chip: 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, a dual Neural Engine with two 16-core engines, and 170GB/s memory bandwidth. Apple claims up to 40% faster CPU, up to 2x graphics, and up to 4x AI performance versus M5. You get 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD.

The important thing about this model is that the $1,099 and $1,299 configs have the same chip. The processor, GPU, and Neural Engine do not change until you reach the M5 Pro. So the $899 machine is as fast as the $1,299 machine on anything that fits in 16GB and 256GB. For browsing, office work, coding, and photo editing, it does.

Ports are the same across all M6 configs: two front USB-C at 10Gb/s, three rear Thunderbolt 4 at 40Gb/s, HDMI 2.1, 2.5Gb Ethernet, and a 3.5mm jack. Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread are standard. It weighs 1.5 pounds.

The $200 step buys 256GB more storage and nothing else. Same chip, same memory, same ports.

Whether this is worth it depends on how you feel about external drives. Apple’s internal SSD is fast and invisible. But $200 for 256GB is far more per gigabyte than an external SSD, and the external drive can move to your next Mac. If you would rather have nothing plugged in and a clean desk, pay the $200. If you already own a portable SSD or plan to buy a stand with an NVMe slot, skip this tier.

This is the config for anyone who runs local AI models, keeps many browser tabs and creative apps open at once, or edits large photo and video files. Unified memory is shared between the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine, so a heavier GPU or AI workload eats into what the rest of the system has. 24GB gives that room. Memory cannot be added later, which is why we would rather see people spend here than on internal storage. If you need more, the M6 configures up to 32GB and 2TB at purchase.

$1,699: M5 Pro, 24GB / 512GB

The Apple Mac mini M5 Pro changes the chip. The M5 Pro has a 15-core CPU and a 16-core GPU, and its three rear ports become Thunderbolt 5 at 120Gb/s. Memory configures up to 64GB and storage up to 8TB. It weighs 1.6 pounds in the same enclosure.

The $400 step from the $1,299 M6 buys three things: more CPU and GPU cores, Thunderbolt 5, and a higher memory ceiling. Thunderbolt 5 is the practical one. It is the only way to use a TB5 dock like the CalDigit TS5 Plus at full bandwidth, and it is what you want for fast external NVMe storage and multi-display 6K setups. If none of those apply, the $1,299 M6 is the better buy.

One note: we do not have a published comparison between the M6 and the M5 Pro on CPU speed. The M6 is a newer generation, the M5 Pro has more cores. Which is faster on a given task is not something to assume before independent testing.

The Storage Trap

Every Mac mini SSD is soldered. Whatever you buy on September 22 is what you have. 256GB sounds like a lot until macOS, Xcode or the Adobe apps, and a photo library are on it, at which point you are managing free space. Plan for this before you order.

Both approaches are slower than Apple’s internal SSD, which the company says is up to 2x faster on the M6. For the operating system and apps, internal wins. For files, external is fine and far cheaper.

Memory for Local AI Models

If you are buying a Mac mini M6 to run language models or image generation locally, the memory tier is the decision, not the chip. Every M6 config has the same Neural Engine.

Unified memory holds the model, and whatever is left holds macOS and your apps. A small model fits in 16GB with room for a browser. A mid-size model wants 24GB or 32GB. Larger models need the M5 Pro’s 64GB. The exact sizes depend on the model and how it is quantized, so match the tier to the largest model you actually intend to run, then add headroom. When the Mac Studio Makes More Sense

The Apple Mac Studio starts at $2,499 with an M5 Max and ships the same day as the mini, with an M5 Ultra above it. It costs $800 more than the M5 Pro mini.

Buy the Studio when the mini’s ceiling is the problem: you need more than 64GB of memory, you want the Max or Ultra GPU for 3D or long video renders, or you run sustained workloads where the Studio’s larger enclosure and cooling matter. For everyone under that line, the M5 Pro mini does the work at $800 less and takes up a quarter of the space.

Education Pricing

Apple has historically offered education pricing on Macs through its education store for students, parents of students, and educators, and the Mac mini has usually been included.
