Apple finally replaced the 2022 Studio Display in March 2026, and it did so twice. The new Studio Display went on sale March 11 at the same $1,599, and a Studio Display XDR arrived alongside it at $3,299. Four years of stale hardware made the old model an easy target. The new one is harder to argue with, and also harder to justify against a 5K market that now starts under $1,000.

What Changed From the 2022 Model

The Apple Studio Display (2026) keeps the part that mattered: a 27-inch 5K Retina panel with more than 14 million pixels at 218 pixels per inch, rated at 600 nits. That density is what macOS scales for by default, so text renders at exactly two device pixels per point with no fractional blur. If you bought the 2022 model for the screen, you already know what this one looks like.

The changes are behind the panel. The single Thunderbolt 3 port and three USB-C ports are gone, replaced by two Thunderbolt 5 ports and two USB-C ports. Charging stays at up to 96W, which keeps a 14-inch MacBook Pro topped up and slows the drain on a 16-inch under heavy load. Thunderbolt 5 matters most for people connecting a MacBook Pro M5 Pro or Max, or the new Mac Studio, and running fast storage off the display.

The 12MP Center Stage camera gains Desk View, which shows an overhead-style view of your desk during calls. The three-mic array carries over. The six-speaker system is revised with what Apple describes as 30 percent deeper bass than the previous generation.

What did not change is the list of things people complained about in 2022. The panel is still SDR with no local dimming. Apple does not state a refresh rate, and we assume it is 60Hz until told otherwise. The tilt-only stand is still the default, with the tilt- and height-adjustable stand and the VESA adapter sold as options at extra cost.

The Studio Display XDR: Who Actually Needs It

The Apple Studio Display XDR is the same 27-inch 5120x2880 size with a mini-LED backlight behind it. It has 2,304 local dimming zones, 1000 nits of sustained SDR brightness, 2000 nits peak in HDR, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a 120Hz refresh rate. Charging goes up to 140W, enough to fully power a 16-inch MacBook Pro. The tilt- and height-adjustable stand is included, with a VESA adapter as an option.

At $3,299 ($3,199 education), it costs $1,700 more than the base model. That gap buys three things: real HDR with deep blacks, the smoother 120Hz cursor and scrolling you get on a MacBook Pro screen, and a stand you would otherwise pay extra for.

If you color grade video, retouch photos for print, or deliver HDR content to clients, the XDR is the cheaper path to a reference-grade Apple display than the old Pro Display XDR was. The 5K Rivals That Changed the Math

In 2022 the only 5K alternatives were LG’s UltraFine and, later, the Samsung ViewFinity S9. In 2026 the field is wider and cheaper.

The Samsung Odyssey G8 G80HF is the one that matters. It is a 27-inch 5K IPS panel at 165Hz, with a Dual Mode that drops to 1440p at 330Hz for competitive gaming, 1ms GtG response, and 400 nits. It has two HDMI 2.1 inputs, DisplayPort 2.1, a dual-USB 3.0 hub, and a headphone jack. Price is $950, and it is available now.

The catch for Mac users is connectivity. Samsung lists no USB-C or Thunderbolt video input that we can confirm, so a MacBook needs a USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or a dock, plus a separate charger. There is no webcam and no six-speaker array. It is 200 nits dimmer than the Studio Display. But at 165Hz for $950, it makes the Studio Display’s assumed 60Hz look expensive, and it is the obvious pick if the same desk runs a gaming PC.

The Samsung ViewFinity S9 is the older one-cable alternative. It is a 27-inch 5K panel with Thunderbolt 4, a matte finish, a detachable webcam, and a height-adjustable stand in the box. It launched at $1,599 and has spent long stretches heavily discounted. If you find it well under the Studio Display’s price, it does the single-cable job for a Mac with a weaker speaker set and Samsung’s TV-style menus.

The LG 32U990A goes the other direction: bigger and sharper than Apple, not cheaper. It is a 32-inch 6K IPS Black panel with Thunderbolt 5 and 96W power delivery, listed at $2,000 and marked “available soon” at the time of writing. For a Mac Studio owner who wants more desktop area than 27 inches with true Retina density, it is the closest thing to a modern Pro Display XDR replacement without the XDR price.

If 5K is not a requirement, the Dell UltraSharp U2725QE and its predecessor the U2723QE remain the 4K USB-C workhorses at roughly a third of the Studio Display’s price. Text at “looks like 2560x1440” is sharp; it is simply not 218 PPI sharp.

The Used and Refurbished 2022 Model

The 2026 launch pushed 2022 units onto the used market in volume. That model has the same 5K resolution and 600 nits, a Thunderbolt 3 port with 96W charging, and three USB-C ports. For a Mac that lacks Thunderbolt 5, or one that never runs fast external storage through the display, the practical difference is the camera’s Desk View mode and the deeper speaker bass.

Apple’s certified refurbished store also lists the older model at times, with a one-year warranty and AppleCare+ eligibility. On the open market, verify three things: which stand it has, since it cannot be swapped later; whether the glossy glass is scratched; and whether all four ports work. A used 2022 unit with the height-adjustable stand or VESA mount, priced well under $1,000, is arguably the best value on this page for a Mac user who only needs 60Hz SDR.

Verdict by User Type

Developers, writers, analysts on a Mac. Buy the 2026 Studio Display, or a used 2022 one if the price gap is large. The 5K text rendering is the reason, and neither HDR nor 120Hz changes how a code editor looks.

Video editors, colorists, HDR photographers. The Studio Display XDR. Mini-LED with 2,304 zones and 2000 nits peak is what you are paying for, and the 140W charging removes the MagSafe brick from the desk.

Mac users who also game, or want high refresh. The Samsung G80HF. Accept the dock and the missing webcam in exchange for 165Hz at $950.

Mac Studio or Mac mini owners wanting more space. The LG 32U990A when it ships, or the Samsung G80HS 6K at $1,600 if Thunderbolt is not required.

Windows users. Skip Apple. The Studio Display’s camera, speakers, and brightness controls all depend on macOS. The G80HF gives you the same 5K density with ports a PC actually uses.

Bottom Line

The 2026 Studio Display is the monitor the 2022 model should have been: Thunderbolt 5, a better camera, better speakers, same price. For Mac users who read text all day, it remains the best screen for the job, and ordering it with the VESA adapter fixes the only real ergonomic complaint.

But it is no longer the only serious 5K option. Samsung sells 165Hz 5K for $950, LG is bringing 6K Thunderbolt 5 to 32 inches, and Apple’s own XDR now exists for anyone who needs HDR. Worth it, yes, for the right buyer. Just be sure you are that buyer before spending $1,599 on a display that assumes you never want more than 60Hz.
