IKEA Karlby Desk Setup: The Budget Minimal Build Guide
How to build a clean minimal desk setup using the IKEA KARLBY countertop on ALEX drawer units. Total cost including full peripherals: $1,080.
This setup is built on the most popular desk combination on Reddit. The IKEA KARLBY Countertop (74-inch) on two IKEA ALEX Drawer Units is the canonical minimal desk build. I put this together for $1,080 all-in. Here’s what makes it work and where it falls short.

Why KARLBY Plus ALEX Works
The KARLBY countertop costs $119. The two ALEX drawer units cost $149 each. Total desk cost: $417. You get a 74-inch wide, 25-inch deep solid surface with built-in storage on both sides. The walnut veneer surface is warm and photographs well. The depth of 25 inches is enough for a monitor at arm’s length with keyboard in front. The ALEX drawers provide twelve drawer slots for desk accessories, notebooks, and cables. Every setup needs storage. The ALEX provides it without a separate piece of furniture.
Assembly takes about two hours. The KARLBY countertop rests directly on top of both ALEX units. No brackets required. The weight of the countertop holds it in place. Some builders add L-brackets underneath for security. I didn’t. It hasn’t shifted in months.
The SIGNUM Cable Rail: The Hidden Feature
The IKEA SIGNUM Cable Management Rail at $19 is the most underrated IKEA desk accessory. It mounts to the underside of the KARLBY countertop and holds cables in a horizontal channel under the surface. Monitor cables, USB hubs, and chargers sit in the rail instead of hanging loose. From the front, the desk looks completely clean. From behind, cables are organized in a single channel.
Without the SIGNUM, the KARLBY build looks messy immediately. With it, the setup looks intentional. Add Velcro Cable Ties at $9 to bundle the cables inside the rail.
Monitor: LG 27GP850-B at $299
I chose the LG 27GP850-B Monitor for the KARLBY build. The 1440p IPS panel at 165Hz and the clean minimal stand make it a natural fit. The stand’s footprint is compact enough to avoid occupying the full desk depth. If you want to free more surface space, the VESA Monitor Mount Adapter at $39 allows an aftermarket arm. I use the stock stand here. It works well.
The BenQ ScreenBar Monitor Light at $63 clips to the monitor top. It lights the surface evenly without a separate lamp stand. The warm tone at 3000K matches the walnut surface.
Keyboard and Mouse: Keychron K2 Pro ($99) and MX Master 3S ($99)
The Keychron K2 Pro Keyboard is compact and wireless. The 75% layout leaves space for the mouse without a numpad. Bluetooth keeps the surface cable-free. The Logitech MX Master 3S Mouse is the best productivity mouse available. The scroll wheel is fast enough for long documents and precise enough for design. Both peripherals sit on the Leather Desk Pad at $29, which protects the walnut veneer and unifies the surface visually.
Making This Look Premium
Three things elevate the KARLBY build from cheap to considered. First, cable management: the SIGNUM rail and velcro ties make the difference. Second, the desk pad: covering the center of the walnut surface with a leather pad creates a defined work zone and adds texture contrast. Third, the monitor light: removing a separate lamp from the surface declutters the layout. Add a small plant in the right corner. The walnut surface and greenery photograph extremely well.
What I’d Change
The KARLBY veneer is not solid wood. It will chip at corners under heavy use. I added small rubber edge protectors on the front corners. The ALEX drawers have push-to-open hardware that occasionally sticks in humid conditions. The drawers themselves are solid. The mechanism is not. I’d also add a monitor arm in a second version of this build. The desk depth of 25 inches is tight with the stock monitor stand when the keyboard and mouse take up the front portion.
