Build and Design

The Sony WH-1000XM6 launched in May 2025 at around $449. The biggest design change is a reversal: the folding hinge that Sony removed on the XM5 is back. The earcups fold inward, and the case is smaller and closes with a magnetic latch instead of a zipper. For a headphone that moves between a desk and a bag, that matters.

The headband is wider than the XM5’s and distributes weight better across long sessions. The earcup padding is soft synthetic leather. The frame is plastic, which keeps weight low, but it does not feel cheap. Sony replaced the XM5’s touch-sensitive power control with a proper physical power button, which is easier to find by feel. Touch controls on the right earcup handle volume and playback.

Performance and Daily Use

Noise cancellation is the reason to buy this headphone. Sony moved to a new processor, listed as the QN3, and added microphones, twelve in total. The result is stronger cancellation of mid-range sound such as voices and keyboard clatter, which is exactly what an open office or a shared apartment produces. Low-frequency hum from fans and HVAC was already handled well on the XM5, and the XM6 holds that ground.

Sound quality is tuned warmer than neutral out of the box, with a bass lift that suits most listening. The Sony app has a full equalizer if you want it flatter. LDAC is supported for higher bitrate on Android. Multipoint pairing connects to two devices at once, so a Teams call on the laptop and music on the phone hand off without re-pairing.

Battery life is rated around 30 hours with ANC on. A short charge over USB-C gives a few hours of playback. One limitation carried from the XM5: the USB-C port charges only and does not carry audio, so a wired connection means the 3.5mm cable.

Call quality is improved thanks to the extra microphones and AI-based voice isolation. It is good enough that most desk workers will not need a separate headset.

Who Should Buy It

Anyone who works at a desk in a noisy environment. The XM6 cancels the sounds that break concentration, and it stays comfortable for a full day. Remote workers who split time between home and coworking spaces benefit most from the folding design.

Commuters upgrading from an XM3 or XM4 will notice the jump in cancellation and call quality immediately.

Who Should Skip It

XM5 owners. The improvements are real but incremental, and the XM5 still costs less on sale.

Anyone who needs USB-C audio for a desktop DAC setup or wants a headphone for running. There is no IP rating.

Listeners who prioritize neutral sound over cancellation should look at open-back headphones for desk use instead.
