The IKEA Alex drawer unit is still the cheapest way to build a wide, solid desk with real storage in 2026. Two Alex units (around $90 to $140 each depending on finish; check IKEA for the current price) under a Karlby countertop gets you a 74-inch desk for roughly $400. The build is fixed at about 29 inches tall and cannot be adjusted, so if you are under about 5’6” or you want to stand, the standing-frame hybrid below is the version to copy.

What is the IKEA Alex drawer unit and what sizes does it come in?

The IKEA Alex drawer unit is a five-drawer pedestal that is about 14 1/8 inches wide, 22 7/8 inches deep, and 27 1/2 inches tall (36 x 58 x 70 cm). The top drawer is shallow, the other four are deep, and the unit is particleboard with a foil finish. White is standard; other colors rotate by year. IKEA sells the Alex directly for roughly $90 to $140; the Amazon listings below are third-party resellers who add shipping and margin, so buy from IKEA when you can and use Amazon as a fallback.

The 27 1/2-inch height is why it works as a desk leg: add a top and you land at about 29 inches. IKEA also sells a taller nine-drawer Alex and a version on casters; neither fits under a top, so measure first.

Which IKEA top fits the Alex: Karlby, Lagkapten, or Linnmon?

Karlby is a kitchen countertop, which is why it looks and feels better than the others. It comes 74 inches or 98 inches wide, 25 5/8 inches deep, and about 1 1/2 inches thick, with a particleboard core under a real wood veneer in walnut, oak, or ash depending on the year. The 74-inch weighs about 66 pounds. Expect somewhere around $150 to $200 for the 74-inch and more for the 98-inch; check IKEA.

Lagkapten is IKEA’s mid-range tabletop: 47 1/4, 55 1/8, or 78 3/4 inches wide, 23 5/8 inches deep, roughly 1 3/8 inches thick. The core is hollow honeycomb card, so it is light and cheap, usually around $40 to $90. Finishes include white, white stained oak effect, black-brown, and dark grey.

Linnmon is the budget top, 39 3/8, 47 1/4, or 59 inches wide, also hollow, and usually around $15 to $60. Fine for a laptop and a monitor, not for a heavy clamp in the middle of the span.

1. The classic: two Alex units and a Karlby countertop

This is the build that made the Alex famous, and it is the one our Alex drawer desk setup walks through in detail. Two Alex units sit at the ends of a 74-inch IKEA Karlby countertop, the countertop rests on them by weight, and you get a 74 x 25 5/8-inch surface with ten drawers for roughly $400.

What to buy: two Alex units, one 74-inch Karlby, four L-brackets and short screws if you want the top fixed, and a cable tray.

Why it works: the drawers double as legs and the veneer top takes a monitor arm clamp. Leave 45 to 50 inches of knee space between the units, and add a third support if you go to the 98-inch Karlby.

2. Budget: one Alex and Adils legs

If $400 is too much, one Alex on the left and two IKEA Adils legs on the right holds a 47 1/4-inch Lagkapten or Linnmon for around $150 to $200 total. The Adils is a 27 1/2-inch steel leg, the same height as the Alex, so the top sits level.

What to buy: one Alex, two or three Adils legs, one Lagkapten 47 1/4 or 55 1/8 inch top (or a Linnmon to go cheaper), and the screws that come with the Adils.

Watch the mounting: Adils legs screw into the underside of the top; on a hollow Lagkapten or Linnmon, screw into the solid edge frame, not the middle. A full setup with monitor and keyboard still fits our desk setup under $500 budget.

3. Hybrid: Karlby on a FlexiSpot frame with an Alex beside it

The fixed 29-inch height is the main reason people abandon the Alex build, and the fix is to put the Karlby on an electric frame. The FlexiSpot E7 frame sold without a top accepts tops from roughly 47 to 79 inches wide and 24 to 31 inches deep, and FlexiSpot rates it well above the weight of a 74-inch Karlby plus monitors. The frame runs around $300 to $450.

What to buy: one E7 frame (frame only), one 74-inch Karlby, one Alex, and wood screws sized so they do not poke through the 1 1/2-inch top.

The rule: the Alex cannot sit under a top that moves. Either park it beside the desk as a freestanding pedestal, or set the frame’s minimum height above 29 inches so the top always clears the 27 1/2-inch unit. 4. Corner or L-shaped: two tops and three Alex units

For a corner, use two tops that meet at a right angle and share one Alex in the corner. A 74-inch Karlby along the long wall on two Alex units, and a 47 1/4-inch IKEA Lagkapten tabletop along the short wall resting on the corner Alex and one more unit or an Adils leg, gives you an L for roughly $550 to $650.

What to buy: three Alex units (or two plus Adils legs), one long top, one short top, and a flat steel mending plate to tie the two tops together underneath.

5. Gaming: Alex with a dark Lagkapten, or just buy the UPPSPEL

A gaming Alex build is the budget build in black-brown: one or two black-brown Alex units under a 78 3/4-inch black-brown or dark grey Lagkapten, with a PC on the floor and a mesh cable tray underneath. It costs around $250 to $350. 6. Minimalist: white Linnmon on one Alex

The cheapest good-looking Alex desk is a white 47 1/4-inch IKEA Linnmon table top on one white Alex and two white Adils legs. All-white, about $150 to $180, and it disappears against a white wall, which is why it fills so many minimal setups.

What to buy: one Linnmon 47 1/4 x 23 5/8, one white Alex, two white Adils legs, a white cable tray, and a light desk mat.

Keep it clean: clamp the monitor arm at the edge above the Alex where the top has support, run one cable down the back of the drawer unit, and stop there. The white minimal desk setup shows the finished look.

Accessories that make an Alex build work

Monitor arm. The Ergotron LX clamps to the 1 1/2-inch Karlby with no adapter and holds most 27 to 34-inch monitors. On a hollow Lagkapten or Linnmon, clamp within a couple of inches of the edge over the frame, or add a reinforcement plate under the clamp so it does not crush the honeycomb. Mistakes people make with IKEA Alex desks

Spanning a 98-inch Karlby on two supports. The 74-inch top on end-mounted Alex units spans about 45 to 50 inches and holds. The 98-inch spans over 70 inches and will bow under a PC and two monitors over time. Add a third Alex, an Adils leg, or a steel angle brace in the middle.

Ignoring the fixed 29 to 30-inch height. The Alex build cannot be lowered. Standard ergonomic advice puts the keyboard at seated elbow height, and 29 inches fits people roughly 5’8” and up. If you are shorter, add a keyboard tray, raise the chair and use a footrest, or go with build 3.

Alex depth versus top depth. The Alex is 22 7/8 inches deep, the Karlby is 25 5/8 and the Lagkapten 23 5/8. Align the Alex to the back so the front edge overhangs slightly and the drawers pull clear of your knees.

Drilling into particleboard without pilot holes. The Alex top panel splits if you drive a screw straight in. Drill pilot holes, use screws shorter than the panel thickness, and never screw into the hollow center of a Lagkapten or Linnmon.

Build 1, two Alex units and a 74-inch Karlby, is still the best value desk with storage you can put together for around $400, and the only reasons to choose differently are height and budget. Pick build 2 or 6 to get under $200, build 3 if you want to stand, and build 5 if the room is for gaming.
